Andrea Doria or Andrew Doria (Brig) 1775

Andrea Doria or Andrew Doria was a 14-gun brig purchased in Philadelphia in November 1775 and commissioned in December 1775. Her commander was Captain Nicholas Biddle.

She was larger than the Cabot and carried a crew of 130. She sailed with the Continental Fleet to the Bahama Islands in March 1776, taking part in the amphibious operation there, and in the engagement with HMS Glasgow on the way North. During summer of 1776 she cruised off the New England coast, taking several prizes.

In October 1776, under the command of Captain Isaiah Robinson, Andrea Doria sailed to St. Eustatius in the West Indies for military stores where, on 16 November she received the first salute to the Continental Flag by a foreing power. Off Puerto Rico she took the 12-gun Racehorse which had been sent out to capture the Andrea Doria. The two ships reached Philadelphia, but Andrea Doria never went to sea again. Blockaded in the Delaware River, she took part in the defence of Philadelphia during October November 1777, and was burned to avoid capture on 15 November 1777.

The stamp is designed after a painting made by Phillips Melville, which shows us the American brigantine ANDREW DORIA. She is the vessel in the foreground, the vessel on the left not identified.

On 16 November 1776 the brigantine ANDREW DORIA bearing at her masthead the flag of the Continental Congress arrived at St. Eustatius, and on coming to in the harbor fired a salute which by orders of Governor de Graaf, was answered by the fort, with an honor salute of 13 guns.
