Built as a brig-sloop by Plymouth Dockyard for the Royal Navy.
23 May 1820 ordered. April 1822 keel laid down.
19 May 1825 launched under the name HMS MUTINE one of the Cherokee Class.
Tonnage 235 ton (bm), 297 ton displacement, dim. 90 x 24.6 x 11ft.
Armament 4 guns.
Crew 33.
04 September 1826 commissioned under command of Lieutenant Richard Pawle
21 October 1826 completed.

After completed used as a packet brig from Falmouth for the South America service till she was sold in 1840 to Tibbett, Stoneman & Spencer.

17 November 1826 sailed from Falmouth on her maiden voyage, making calls at Pernambuco, Brazil on the 20th December and she arrived at Bahia on Christmas Day. Arrived at Rio de Janeiro on 02 January 1927. She stayed there for a long time; her return voyage was on 03 February and arrived at Falmouth on the 27th.

12 September 1927 she sailed again from Falmouth and arrived at Rio de Janeiro on 13 November, after she had made calls at Pernambuco and Bahia.
01 December left Rio de Janeiro and arrived safely at Falmouth on 27 January 1828.

Till 1840 used in this service as a packet.

When listed for sale she was based at Chatham, and she was bought by Messrs Tibbett, Stoneman and Spence for £740 without stores on 27 May 1841. It was also noted that £913 worth of stores had been returned most probably to the Royal Navy, before the sale.

Then things starting to begin a little obscure, the Australian sources have that she was bought from the London House of Bennet who had fitted her out (of he was the owner?) as a South Sea whaler, and re-rigged as a barque.
27 May 1841 Renamed ALADDIN. What she was doing between 1841 and 1846 is also obscure

Capt. McArthur of Hobart, Tasmania was sent by Charles Seal to England to purchase a suitable vessel as replacement for the lost whaler MARIA ORR, and after arrival in the U.K. bought the ALADDIN for £500.
Tonnage given as 282 tons, dim. 96.7 x 22.7 x 18.9ft.
10 September 1846 he sailed from London in the ALADDIN, during the voyage to Tasmania she whaled.
17 January 1847 the Hobart Town Courier record, barque ALADDIN, 264 tons arrived under command of Capt. McArthur, armed with 4 guns, crew 26, 30 tuns oil, passenger Mrs. McArthur and child.
Her first whaling voyage out of Hobart was successful she arrived back in October with 50 tuns of sperm oil and 10 tuns of black oil.
From that time, she sailed regularly out of Hobart Town under command of Capt. McArthur
1851 She returned with 65 tons of sperm oil, and as passengers Mrs. Mc Arthur and two girls and one boy.
1853 Was she bought by Phillis Seal, Rbt Gardner & John McArthur, Hobart Town.
1855 Capt. McArthur arrived with 50 tons sperm oil.
1857 Under command of Capt Cracknell

She caught two humpback whales off Norfolk Island in November 1857 and is the first whaler to be recorded taking whales in the waters off that island.

December 1859 was Seal the only owner and Captain Mc Arthur in command.
March 1864 when Seal sold his whaling fleet, John McArthur bought her. (he died in 1875.), for exact the same amount he bought her in 1846, £500. She was shifted to the New Wharf at Hobart Town, to repair her copper sheeting.
1865 King Billy (William Lane) the last male of the Tasmanian aborigines was a crewmember on board of the ALADDIN, Capt McArthur had his wife and youngest son on board, the boy only 4 years old fell down the hold and was killed. He was buried on Lord Howe Island.
23 July 1866 she arrived at Hobart Town with 47 tuns sperm oil. The oil was sold by W Crosby & Comp. For £108 per tun
June 1869 she arrived at Hobart with 38 tuns of sperm oil, still under command of Capt. McArthur during a voyage of 13½ month she never let go her anchor or entered a port.
In 1871 she lost one of her whaling boats during a gale.

May 1875 was she bought by Charles Colvin, Wm Crosby and G. R. McArthur, Hobart.
May 1877 was Wm. Crosby the only owner, and was she whaling under command of Capt. Hill.
June 1880 sold to George Salier.
21 June 1880 after a refit, she sailed out under Capt. James McGregor from Hobart Town. The same year w trying out a whale off the Sollenders a chain broke from the strain. Reports say a flying link struck Capt. Edward Copping (must have changed captains) and fractured his skull.
His body was brought to Hobart on board the S S ARAWATTA, and he was buried at Sandy Bay cemetery.
1881 When she was whaling off the New Zealand coast three of her crew deserted in a boat. The boat was found back later on the coast.
23 February 1882 when in company whaling with the ASIA off the Sollenders a boat from the ALADDIN struck a whale. It proved to be a fighting bull, he seized the boat’s bow in the month, luckily most of the crew got clear but the mate got into the jaws of the whale, but a large piece of wood from the boat which prevented the whale to close them. An other boat picked all up. A few days the bull was killed, but it yielded only five tons of oil.
1882 The ALADDIN arrived at Hobart Town after a voyage of 12 months with only 20 tons sperm oil.
Her last whaling voyage was under Capt. S Kennedy and after a 12 month voyage she arrived in October 1885 back in Hobart with on board 45 tuns oil.
When Salier dies the executor of his will is John Henry who sells the vessel in December 1892 to the Treasurer of Tasmania. She was converted in a powder hulk and used as so in the River Derwent, slowly rotting away on her moorings.
1902 Was the register closed and she is broken up.

Can you suggest quiz questions about the Arabian Nights? I have to prepare a short quiz for an upcoming social event. The theme is the tales of the Arabian Nights and I have six or seven good questions already (name of the storyteller, composer of Scheherazade suite etc) but I need some more. Any suggestions?
