TOSCANA

The vessel depict on the stamp of Italy issued in 1998 depict the stern of the Italian ship TOSCANA, which was used in the transport of Italian refugees from Fiume, Istria and Dalmacia in 1947.
The stamp commemorates the exodus in 1947 from these former Italian ruled territories, which were handed over to the Yugoslavian Republic after World War II.
Built as a cargo-passenger vessel under yard No. 325 by A.G.Weser, Bremen for the Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen.
28 June 1923 launched under the name SAARBRÜCKEN.
Tonnage 9.429 gross, 9.449 dwt. Dim. 145.97 x 17.57 x 13.00m. length bpp 140.00m.
Powered by triple expansion steam engines, 4.200 hp., twin screws, speed 12.5 knots.
Passenger accommodation for 98 first, 142-second class, crew 176.
1923 completed.
10 November 1923 sailed on her maiden voyage from Bremen to East Asia.
August 1935 Sold to “Italia” SpA., Genoa, renamed TOSCANA.
1936 Sold to Lloyd Triestino, tonnage given as 9.584 gross.
During the Italian - Ethiopian war used as troop-transport ship
1941 till 1945 in use as a hospital ship, after 1943 in Allied service with Italy’s switch of sides of the war.
1947 Handed back to Lloyd Triestino, the TOSCANA was reconditioned in an emigrant vessel for the service to Australia.
Passenger accommodation increased to 136 saloon and 690 third class passengers.
First voyage in the Australia service, January 1948 sailed from Trieste via Aden and Colombo to Fremantle and Sydney.
Later her accommodation was given as 819 third class passengers.
1954 Tonnage given as 9.584 gross, 5.677 net, 8.956 dwt.
December 1960 laid up at Trieste.
21 February 1962 arrived at Genoa for breaking up by ARDEM SpA.
Work commenced in March 1962, the breaking up of the TOSCANA was completed in Vado Ligure.
