Built as a research vessel under yard No 140 by the Maryland Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Baltimore for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), Woods Hole, Mass. USA.
08 September 1962 launched under the name ATLANTIS II, the biologist Dr. Mary Sears of WHOI christened her.

She was built under a $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation.
She arrived at Woods Hole on 01 February 1963 from Baltimore, and delivered that day to WHOI.
Three weeks later she sailed out for her first science voyage, for a return voyage to Bermuda.
05 April 1963 she sailed out for a routine biology cruise in the Gulf of Maine, but during this voyage she received news that the new USA nuclear submarine THRESHER had sunk 220 miles east of Cape Cod in 8.000 feet of water, and she was asked to help with the search for the sunken submarine. The ATLANTIS II collected the first photographic evidence of the wreckage of the submarine.

She was one of the first research vessels who took women scientists to sea, and took on female officers and crew.
October 1975 she made the longest voyage by miles of one of the WHOI vessels, a 573-day voyage over almost 80.000 miles around the world. She arrived back at Woods Hole in May 1977.
1984 Converted into a parents ship for explorations of the research submersible ALVIN.
On her 125th voyage, which began 29 December 1989, she spent 894 days away from Woods Hole and 575 days at sea before returning to base on 10 June 1992, she covered that voyage a distance of 73.907 miles.
1986 She visited the wreck of the RMS TITANIC off New Foundland.
Twelve dives were made by her submersible ALVIN on the wreck of the TITANIC to test the Institution’s prototype remotely operated vehicle JASON JR and other deep-sea imaging systems amidst intense worldwide publicity.
23 July 1996 she sailed from Woods Hole for the last time to the shipyard in Louisiana for removal of her stern A-frame, which was used, for her submersible launch/recovery operations. The A-frame will be used for a newly built vessel.
09 January 1997 till 11 November 1997 she was renamed in ANTARIS after she was sold to an unspecified USA owner.
