PENETANG HMCS

Built as a frigate under yard No. 557 by Davie Shipbuilding and repairing Co. Ltd., Lauzon, Port Quebec, Canada for the Canadian Navy.
22 September 1943 laid down, her intended name was ROUYN but before launching changed.
06 July 1944 launched under the name HMCS PENETANG (K676) one of the River Class.
Displacement 1.445 tons, dim. 301.5 x 36.6 x 9ft. (draught).
Powered by triple expansion steam engines, 5.500 ihp., twin shafts, speed 20 knots.
Armament: 2 – 4 inch guns, 4 – 20mm Hedgehog.
Crew 8 officers and 133 crew.
19 October 1944 commissioned.

She is depict on this stamp of Nevis for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day, but she never took part in the D-Day landings.
Could not find anything on her wartime history, maybe never took part in any battle, and only used as patrol vessel.
10 November 1945 paid of at Shelburne N.S.
01 June 1954 re-commissioned as one of the Prestonian Class (316).
25 January 1956 paid off.
The same day commissioned in the Norway Navy as KNM DRAUG (F313).
After a few days of maneuvers and tests, she departed from Halifax 04 February 1956 and arrived 16 February at Bergen, Norway.
Originally, she was only on loan from Canada, but in the beginning of 1959, she was officially taken over by the Royal Norwegian Navy.
Under Norway flag she carried a crew of 140 men.

During one of her regular fishery and surveillance patrols, she grounded on the Icelandic coast on 20 June 1964, she was later salvaged, but condemned the same year.

March 1965 sold to Andreas Stoltenberg, Oslo for breaking up.

On Nevis 2004 $1.20 60th Anniversary of D-Day.
