SAM McBRIDE

At the end of 2004 Canada issued a set of 5 50 cent self-adhesive stamps in the Regions series. One of these stamps shows the Toronto skyline and a small ferry in the foreground, and identified by Mr. Peter Crichton as the ferry SAM McBRIDE.

Built as a ferry under yard No 6 by the Toronto Dry Dock, Toronto for the Corporation of the City of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.
Launched under the name SAM McBRIDE, named after the former mayor of Toronto at that time.
Tonnage 412 gross, 266 net, 234dwt. Dim. 35.26 x 10.05 x 2.74m., draught 1.82m.
Powered by a 5-cyl oil engine, manufactured by Fairbank Morse & Co. Beloit, Wis., 900 bhp., speed 12 knots. Did have a propeller fore and aft.
Accommodation for 1000 passengers.
Two decks.
November 1939 completed.

She was a double-ended ferry and she was used between the city and a small island in front of the town.
1955 Owned by the Toronto Transit Commission, Toronto.
1961 Transferred to Metro Toronto Parks & Culture, Toronto.
1997 Transferred to Department of Parks and Recreation.
2005 Transferred to Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division.
2008 Still sailing under same name and owners.
