HMS RENOWN was launched in 1916. She was a battle cruiser of 32,000 tons with a main armament of six 15 inch guns and a design speed of 31.5knots. After the First World War in which she saw service with the Grand Fleet she took the Prince of Wales on his Empire tours. Service with the Home and Mediterranean Fleets followed.
The outbreak of the Second World War took her into the South Atlantic in company of the ARK ROYAL to hunt the German raiders operating in the trade routes. The RENOWN rejoined the Home Fleet in March 1940 and went with it to cover the Norwegian campaign in the course of which she engaged the SCHARNHORST and GNEISENAU scoring three hits on the latter before they broke off the engagement.
After the collapse of France RENOWN joined the newly formed Force H at Gibraltar and later succeeded HOOD as flagship of the Force. In February 1941 she took part in the bombardment of Genoa. In August the same year she returned to the United Kingdom for a refit and then rejoined the Home Fleet before proceeding to the Mediterranean. RENOWN was back with Force H for the Allied landings in North Africa finally severing her ties with that Force in January 1943.
She then transported the Prime Minister, Mr Churchill, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to England and then to Algiers. In December 1943 she hoisted the flag of Vice-Admiral A J Power, second-in-Command Eastern Fleet. After seeing action against the Japanese she returned to Britain and was sent to reserve at Plymouth. President Truman called at Plymouth on the 2nd August 1945, while on his way back to the States on board the US cruiser AUGUSTA, and was received on board the RENOWN by King George VI.
In August 1948 she left Plymouth for the breaker's yard.
