Dutch Hospital Ship built 1912 Conrad Wharf, Haarlem for Netherlands Seamens Soc. 140Gt 77nt. L105’7” B21’3”. Small emergency paraffin engine. Converted 1939 to motor ship with 200hp diesel. Addition of a funnel altered her appearance. During 42 year life 12,023 fishermen were provided with medical attention and welfare facilities including Chapel services. WW2 Germans used her as Red Cross ship on River Scheldt. Recaptured, returned to owners by Royal Netherlands Navy. Sold 22 Sept 1955 to Mr Rasmus Rasmussen, Norway. Rebuilt as fishing vessel renamed KVERNNES. Damaged by fire sold to shipbreakers Aug 1959. Shown on stamp as two masted schooner. Netherlands SG414 (LB 2/70)

Built as a hospital-church ship under yard No 443 by the NV Werf Conrad at Haarlem for the Nederlandse Ver. ten behoeve van Zeelieden van elke Nationaliteit ( Netherlands Seamen’s Society).
August 1911 ordered for Fl. 44,900.
Launched as DE HOOP (II) (the hope)
Tonnage 140 gross, 77 net, dim. 33.96 x 6.51m.
Rigged as a schooner, one auxiliary Kromhout oil engine 76 hp.
Crew 13.
01 April 1912 completed.
01 June 1912 she left port for her first voyage to the fish grounds in the North Sea to assist the herring fishery fleet.
1934 Fitted out with a radio sender from Radio Holland.
1938 Was she completely renovated which completely changed her appearance, she became a motor vessel with an auxiliary sail, a new 4-cyl Kromhout diesel engine installed, 195 hp., speed 9 knots. Accommodation altered for a crew of 16 men and the hospital could berth 22 patients, it was also fitted out with a pharmacy and an isolation cabin.
1940 Requisitioned by the Dutch Government for use as a rescue vessel.
06 August DE HOOP was visited by German authorities, and on 3 January 1941 requisitioned but still crewed by a Dutch crew used as a rescue/hospital vessel under No ZRD 10. Stationed in Hook of Holland.
04 January 1941 stationed in Vlissingen (Flushing).
05 September 1944 the Dutch crew left the vessel, and a German crew took over.
06 October 1944 the ZRD 10 came under fire of Allied airplanes on her way from Dordrecht to Vlissingen (Flushing) a young Dutch male nurse was severe wounded and died later in hospital, also other crew members were wounded.
13 October 1944 stationed in Dordrecht.
31 October 1944 arrived at Wolphaartsdijk, Zeeland without a German crew (other source give that the German crew still was on board and did not known that Canadian troops had taken over the village) and seized the ZRD 10.
After the war returned to owners and was repaired before she on 31 October 1945 went again as a hospital-church ship to the fish grounds in the North Sea.
23 December 1954 DE HOOP arrived from her last voyage as hospital- church ship in Ijmuiden, during her 42 years in service 12,023 patients were treated.
22 September 1955 sold for Fl 40,000 to Rasmus Rasmussen in Vedavågen, Norway, a Dutch crew under command of Captain W de Vreugd who had been on board the ship for 22 years, sailed his old ship to Haugesund were DE HOOP was taken over by his new owners.
Rebuilt in a fishing vessel (seiner) by Skudesnes Notbarkeri & Slip, Skudesneshavn, Karmøy.
After her rebuilt tonnage 156 grt., dim. 29.50 x 6.52 x 3.13m.
A new engine fitted in a Wichmann diesel engine, 400 bhp.
1956 Under the name KVERNNES R-44-A in service as a herring fishing vessel off Iceland during the spring and in winter off the Norway coast.
1961 Sold to P/R Oddmund Hansen & Jim Høyholm at Bærøyvågen in Tjøtta, Norway, not renamed fishing No changed to N-3-AH.
1968 Not more seaworthy and out of service.
1971 Out of the Norway shipping registry. If she was scrapped, scuttled or condemned is unknown.
(On the stamp she is seen as she was before her rebuilt in a motorvessel in 1938, the photo shows her after her conversion.)
