Mahmudiye

Post by john sefton » Fri Apr 03, 2009 7:12 pm

On July 1,1949, Turkey issued a set of stamps for the "Day of the Fleet" as a tribute to the Turkish Navy. The 10 kurus value shows the ship of the line Mahmudiye. This old "wooden wall" was built at the Arsenal at Istanbul in 1829. In 1854 she was with the Allied Fleet in the Crimean War, under Admiral Ates Mehmet Bey, and was commanded by Patrona Ahmet Pasa. She was 201.5ft. x 56ft x 28ft. depth of hold, drew 25.5ft of water, carried 128 guns and a war-strength crew of 1,280.
