LES SABLES-D'OLONNE

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Apr 06, 2009 8:23 pm

The French post issued a stamp in 2009 which shows us the port Les Sables-d’Olonne on the stamp are two sailing yachts.

The only thing I could find that the four yearly Vendée Globe yacht race starts and ends in Les Sables-d’Olonne, maybe the yacht in the foreground is one of participants in this race.

The port is situated in the Gulf of Biscay on the French west coast near Nantes, the port was founded in 1218, and is the birthplace of the well know pirate François l’Olonnais.
During the 17th century the port was the largest cod-fishing port in France, with 14.000 inhabitants, and during the 19th century she was the largest sardine fishing port.
