SINDHUGOSH INS and SHISHUMAR INS submarines.

This stamp of India depicts two submarines of their navy, the SINDHUGOSH (S55) foreground and the SHISHUMAR ((S44).

Built on the Admiralteyskiye Verf (Admirality Shipyards) at St Petersburg for the Indian Navy.
29 May 1983 laid down.
29 June 1985 launched under the name INS SINDHUGOSH (S55) one of the Sindhugosh class of which 10 were built.
Displacement 2.325 ton surfaced, 3.076 tons dived. Dim. 72.6 x 9.9 x 6.6m. (draught)
Two diesel electric powered motors, 3.650 and one 5.900hp. diesel., single shaft speed 10 knots, surfaced 17 knots.
Armament: 3M54 Klub-S ASCM launchers, fitted in during her refit, carry maximum five missiles, 6 – 21 inch torpedo tubes, carry 18 torpedoes.
Crew 13 officers and 40 crew.
30 April 1986 commissioned in Riga, based at Vishnakapatnam, India.

The submarine is built after the Kilo class design of the Russian Navy, and has a double hull with six compartments, when one compartment is flooded she still is able to surface.
June 2005 she underwent a refit at the Zvyozdochka Shipyard at Severodvinsk arrived back in India late 2005.
2006 Still in service.

The other submarine SHISHUMAR was built by the Howaldtswerke Deutschen Werft A G, (HDW) at Kiel, Germany for the Indian Navy.
11 December 1981 ordered.
01 May 1982 keel laid down.
13 December 1984 launched under the name INS SHISHUMAR (S44), named after a River Ganges dolphin, three sisters.
Displacement 1.450 ton standard, 1.850 ton dived. Dim. 64.4 x 6.5 x 6m. (draught).
Powered diesel electric by 4 diesels, 2.400 hp. One Siemens 4.600hp motor, one shaft, speed 11 knots surfaced, 22 knots dived.
Range: by 8 knots 8000 miles with snorkel, by 10 knots on the surface 13.000 mile.
Armament: 8 – 21inch torpedo tubes, carry 14 torpedoes. Also she can carry 24 mines.
Crew 36.
22 September 1986 commissioned.

February 1987 she sailed for India.
The submarine of this class have a escape sphere which can carry the total crew up to 40 men.
2000 She had a midlife refit by the Mazagon Dock Ltd., at Mumbai.
2006 Still in service.
