MONTAGNE ship-of-the-line

She was built in Brest as a first-rate, three decker ship-of-the-line for the French Navy.
When laid down her intended name would be ÉTATS DE BOURGOGNE.
05 November 1790 launched.
January 1793 renamed CÔTE D’OR.
22 October 1793 renamed MONTAGNE, one of the Océan class.
Tonnage 2.700 tonnes, dim. 65.18 x 16.24 x 8.12m. (draught).
Armament: 32 – 36pdr. lower deck, 34 – 12pdr. middle deck, 34 – 12pdr. upper deck, forecastle 18 – 8pdr. guns and 6 – 36 pdr. carronades.
Sail area: 3.265m².
Crew 1.079.

When commissioned a unit of the Brest Fleet and at that time as the largest ship-of-the-line in Brest she became flagship.
1794 She was de flagship of Rear-Admiral Louis Villaret-Joyeuse in the Glorious First of June battle, in the battle the MONTAGNE was badly damaged by the HMS ROYAL SOVEREIGN and 313 men were killed, and receiving 233 round shots in her hull. The Royal Navy captured 6 French ships-of-the-line and destroyed one, but the French convoy they escorted escaped and also the other French ships, and arrived save in Brest.

17 May 1795 renamed in PEUPLE SOUVERAIN.
A month later again as flagship of Villaret-Joyeuse she fought in the Battle of Groix on 23 June 1795.
26 June 1795 arrived at Lorient, and was renamed OCÉAN.

1797 Refitted in Brest.
1799 She makes a cruise to the Mediterranean as flagship of Vice-Admiral Bruix.
December 1801 again used by Villaret as flagship and ferrying troops of General Emmanuel Leclere’s expedition to Saint Domingo.
11 February 1809 sailed out for an expedition to Guadeloupe, West Indies, but had to return to Rochefort.
After repair she remains thereafter inactive until the end of the French Empire.

02 August 1850 decommissioned, and used as a floating artillery battery from May 1851.
1865 Broken up at Brest.
