CONTRA ALMIRANTE OSCAR VIEL TORO

Built as icebreaker supply and buoy tender under yard No 289 by Canadian Vickers, Montreal for the Canadian Coastguard. She was the last vessel built on the Vickers yard in Montreal.
25 May 1968 launched under the name NORMAN McLEOD ROGERS.
Tonnage 4.179 grt, 1.847 net, displacement 6.320 tons standard, 6.506 full load. Dim. 89.91 x 19.05 x 7.92m., draught 6.05m.
Powered by four Fairbanks-Morse 38D8-1/8-12 diesels, 7.250 hp., sustained 2GE generators 2.76 Mw.
Two GE motors 12.000 shp, twin screws, speed 15 knots.
(Initially fitted out with two turbines, but they were replaced with medium-speed diesel engines, because of high fuel consumption.)
Range 12.000 mile by a speed of 12 knots.
Cargo capacity 900 ton
Armament: nil.
Carried a helicopter.
October 1969 completed. Based at Quebec.

Made almost every year a supply voyage to the Hudson Bay.
Re-engined during a refit between 07-November 1983 and 14 September 1984 with both a diesel-electric and an alternate gasturbine-propulsion system.
1993 Laid up.
20 December 1994 for the first time the Chilean flag was raised at the Esquimalt Shipyard at Victoria, Canada.
14 January 1995 commissioned.
Armament 2 Oerlikons 20mm guns.
Carries a 1BO 105C helicopter.
Crew 33. Has accommodation for 78 persons.
Refitted at ASMAR, Talcahuano, Chile to support the Teniente Marsh and the Teniente Carvajal scientific basis in the Antarctic.
She replaced the Antarctic patrol and survey vessel PILOTO PARDO.
After arrival in Chile in 1995 she made between November 1995 and February 1996 a voyage to the Antarctic continent.
2008 Still in service, IMO No. 6822137.
