Built of steel in Uraga to replace the previous Nippon Maru as a schoolship for the Japanese merchant marine. She was rigged as a four-masted barque carrying royals over double top- and topgallant sails, and was equipped with an auxiliary engine.

Tonnage: 2.891 gross, 867 net, Displacement 4.729.9 ton. Dim. 110.10 x 13.80 x 6.30m. (draught). Length of hull 99.15m.
Sail area 2760 m². carried 36 sails.
Auxiliary engines, two Daihatsu diesels each 1.500 hp.
Crew 70 man, accommodation for 120 cadets.
There is not much difference between the vessels NIPPON MARU (1) and (2), Marine News of 1984 page 656, showed of both vessels a photo, and the difference are, the sheer strake on the 1 is partly open, she carries less sails, and the anchors are carried on the 2 in hawse pipes, while on the 1 carried alongside the shear strake on the bow, and looks so far I can see more like a stocked anchor.
