A bark canoe still used in Mozambique at several coastal embayments for fishing and local transportation.
Constructed of multiple pieces of bark with generous overlaps; sewn with sisal. Numerous ribs extend from gunwale to gunwale; pairs of supple stringers along the bottom and sides. Sharply at the bow; ends held rigged by internal vertical batten. Semicircular or oval in cross-section. Gunwales formed by bamboo poles. Two seats and several thwarts; interwoven shoots create flooring. Poled paddled and at times sets a small lateen sail boomed at the foot.
Outrigger in some areas.
Reported length between 3 and 4 meter. By a length of 3 meter she has a beam of 0.8meter and a depth of 0.4 meter.
A large seagoing type is found just north of Amgoche (António Emes). Paddled or set a lateen sail, length 6 meter beam and dept 0.9 meter.
