TRIAD hms 1939 submarine

Built by the yard of Vickers-Armstrong, Barrow in Furness for the Royal Navy.
24 March 1938 laid down.
05 May 1939 launched under the name HMS TRIAD. She was a submarine of the T class of which 26 were built.
Displacement 1.325 tons surfaced, 1.573 tons submerged. Dim. 273½ x 26½ x 12ft., length between pp 265ft.
Powered by two Vickers diesel engines, 2.500 bhp., two electrics motors, twin screws. Maximum speed on the surface 14 knots. Bunker capacity 132/210 tons.
Armament 1 – 4 inch gun, 3 machine guns, 8 – 21 inch torpedo tubes, two of which were external mounted midships firing forward. Carried 16 torpedoes.
Crew 6 officers and 53 ratings.
16 September 1939 commissioned under command of Capt. R.D.C.P.Jonas.

The class was built as patrol submarines with a endurance of 42 days.
14 October 1939 sailed out for her first patrol, which was uneventful and returned on the 15 Nov.
18 Nov. sailed out for her second petrol. Off the Naze, Norway she damaged a hydroplane shaft and had to be towed to Stavanger for repairs. Only 48 hours was allowed in the neutral port but the work was carried out within the time and she returned to Rosyth, where she arrived on 04 December.
Between 16 December and 28 March 1940 carried out 4 patrols which were uneventful.
08 April sailed out for her next patrol area off the entrance of Oslo Fjord., during which on the 11th she sank the merchant ship IONIA of 3.012 gross tons a Hamburg Amerika Line vessel used as troop-transport in the Skaggerak. On the 20th she sank an other vessel of 4.400 tons. Returned to base on 20 April.
27 June, sailed out for her next patrol, during this patrol she attacked a suspected “Q” ship, a Swedish steamer and was counter attacked. Returned home 13 July.
27 July till 04 August, attacked a U-boat with gunfire without success, neither boat was able to attack the other with torpedoes.
After a short refit in Dundee, sailed out on 29 August and joined the 1st Submarine Flotilla at Gibraltar where she arrived 06 Sept.
From 11 September she made her first patrol in the area of the Tyrrhenian Sea, returned to Gibraltar on 2 October.
09 October 1940 sailed out under command of Capt. G.S.Salt for the sea area of Libya, and would then proceed to Alexandria.
She was reported overdue on 20 October and was sunk on 15 October 1940 in a surface duel with the Italian submarine ENRICO TOTI, the only time an Italian submarine sank a Royal Navy sub. There were no survivors. It is believed she sank in position 38 16N 17 37E, that is in a direction of 175 degree of Cape Colonne.
