EENDRACHT 1623

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Jul 01, 2009 10:36 am

She was a unit of the Nassau fleet of 11 ships, which sailed from Goereesche Gat (Haringvliet) on 29 April 1623 under command of skipper Jan IJsbrandsz for an expedition against the Spanish colonies in South America.
Built in Amsterdam most probably in 1622/23 for the Chamber of the VOC of Enkhuizen, Netherlands. Tonnage 600 ton, armed with 32 guns and a crew of 105 and 5 soldiers. The web-site gives there where 170 eaters on board.
The full storey of the fleet you can read on the following URL

The fleet under command of Admiral Jacques L’Hermite and vice admiral Geen Huyghen Schapenham sailed via the Cape Verde Islands and Sierra Leone to the south, passing February 1624 Cape Horn.
After passing Cape Horn a northerly course was set along the Chilean coastline.04 April Juan Frenández Island was sighted and the fleet entered the bay for refreshments.
13 April the fleet weighed anchor and set course for Peru, most landings were repelled by the Spaniards.
02 June 1624 Admiral L’Hermite died and command was taken over by Schapenham.
The expedition till so far was not so fruitful and the decision was made to sail to the Piscadores Islands off the Peruan coast where according to information gathered from Spanish prisoners water was plentiful.
After taking on board fresh water there the fleet sailed on 16 August, arriving at Guayaquil the 24 August.
At this place the ships were repaired and careened, but to get fresh provision and water did not proceed following plans.
12 September the fleet weighed anchor and sailed to Acapulco where the fleet arrived on 28 October.
15 November 1624 it was decided to proceed to the Ladrones Islands and the actions against the Spanish was discontinued, while the fleet was running out of food and fresh water.
25 January 1625 Guam in the Ladrones was sighted where with the help of cocos nuts and other fresh fruit the crews health improved. Till so far 409 men were lost or died during the voyage.
11 February the fleet left the Ladrones with a course to the Moluccas.
28 february1625 the fleet sighted Ternate and on 05 March the anchor was dropped on the roads of Maleyo.

When the fleet arrived it was given in the written orders that the fleet was placed at the disposal of the VOC.
The EENDRACHT received order to proceed to Sangi and take on board the crew and guns of the VOC ship TROUW that had stranded there.
After the EENDRACHT returned from Sangi she received orders to proceed to Batavia where she arrived on 13 September 1625.
After arrival in Batavia she was refitted for a voyage to the Zeven Provincies (Netherland) with the booty of the expedition.
25 October 1625 she sailed from Batavia still under command of skipper Jan IJsbrandsz with on board a crew of 75 men.
22 January 1626 arrived at the Cape, from where she left on 09 February.
09 July 1626 she arrived on the road of Texel, Netherlands.

Most probably she was not fit more for an other voyage; she is not mentioned more by the VOC.

The designer of the stamp Keith Reynolds gives that she is the EENDRACHT who sighted Taongi one of the Marshall Islands on 25 January 1625. The date given is wrong, the fleet according the journals sighted Guam at that date.

Foreign Ships in Micronesia by Fr. Francis X Hezel gives:

1625 Dutch ship EENDRACHT and ten other vessels of the Nassau Fleet commanded by Adm. Gheen Schapenham, on a voyage to the Moluccas 14 Feb. an island three days out of Guam at 10½N either Fais or Ulithi. Feb. 15 sighted a high island “well cultivated and populous” Canoes came off but could not reach the ship. (the island was most probably Yap).

1625 Dutch ship EENDRACHT and ten other vessels of the Nassau Fleet commanded by Adm. Gheen Schapenham on a voyage to the Moluccas, January 15 sighted an island ten days before making Guam – perhaps Taongi the northernmost of Marshalls.
