ALIA canoe

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Jul 05, 2009 8:38 pm

The ALIA a double canoe was used in Samoa and central Pacific, she looks very strongly as a Tongan KALIA or a Fijian DRUA.
The reported length was between 5.8 and 8.5 meter.
During the 19th century frequently used as raiding canoe during the raids against other tribes or islands.
The hulls were planked up from the keel; the end pieces were solid. Hulls of different lengths, with elongated pointed ends on the shorter hull and vertical on the main hull. Stout crosspieces secured the two hulls; a platform on which a house was usually erected, crossed the hulls.
Carried mostly an boomed lateen sail, set from the main hull. Forward racking mast stayed for and aft; stays slacked off and the mast inclined to the opposite end when going about.
Characteristically stepped the yard into a hole in the ‘bow’ end.
The type is still built today but from marine plywood and fitted out with an outboard motor.
