CROWN ODYSSEY cruise vessel 1988

Built as a cruise vessel under yard no 616 by Meyer Werft of Papenburg, Germany for the Royal Cruise Line, a Greek company.
30 April 1987 keel laid down
14 May 1988 she was named CROWN ODYSSEY.
Tonnage 34.242 gross, 15.401, 3.650dwt., dim.187.71 x 28.21 x 24, draught 6.92m.
Powered by ‘father and son’ four engine plant consisting of two MAK 8 cyl. ‘father engines with an output of 8.000 kW each. And two MAK 6 cyl. ‘son’ engines each developing 2.650 kW. Trial speed 22.30 knots
Passenger accommodation 1.221 passengers in 526 cabins. Crew 443 in 199 cabins. Twin screws.
Fresh water tank capacity 1.700 tons, consumption about 300 tons a day. The distilling machinery can produce about 600 tons fresh water daily.
01 November 1987 floated out.
01 June 1988 delivered to the Greek owners of Piraeus.

04 June 1988 Sailed from Emden to Tilbury, and from 07 June 1988 used for cruising world wide.
1990 Transferred to the Bahamas registry with homeport Nassau.
1992 Sold to Kloster Cruise, Nassau, Bahamas.
May 1996 renamed in NORWEGIAN CROWN and managed by the Norwegian Cruise Line, Nassau, Bahamas.
May 2000 Used in the Orient Line and renamed CROWN ODYSSEY.
March 2003 renamed by owners in NORWEGIAN CROWN.
January 2008 sold to Balmoral Cruise Ltd. United Kingdom, renamed in BALMORAL.
15 November 2007 arrived by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg for lengthening.
January 2008 delivered by yard again to owners, tonnage increased to 34,242 grt, 15,401 net, 5186 dwt, dim. 217.91 x 28.21 x 725m. (draught)
Passenger accommodation for 1778 passengers and 471 crew.
January 2008 made two week cruises from Dover to the Canary Islands.
04 March 2009 she came under attack of Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, she succeeded to escape before the pirates boarded.
BALMORAL was chartered by Miles Morgan Travel to follow the original route of the RMS TITANIC, intending to stop over the point on the sea bed where TITANIC rests on 15 April 2012, to honor the 100th anniversary of her sinking. She set sail from Southampton on Easter Sunday, 8 April 2012, passing Cherbourg and then on to Cobh, formerly Queenstown, in the Republic of Ireland, arriving on Easter Monday, 9 April 2012. Cobh was the last port of call for RMS TITANIC before she set off across the Atlantic.
BALMORAL reached the site of the wreck of TITANIC in time for the 100th anniversary of the sinking at 11pm on 14 April 2012. A memorial service was held on board which culminated in three floral wreaths being cast overboard. BALMORAL remained at the location overnight and then departed early the following morning, with the intention of reaching the TITANIC’s intended destination New York.
