MALDONADO ROU tug

Built as an ocean-tug under yard no 1739 by Schichau Unterweser at Bremen for the German Navy.
Launched under the name NORDERNEY (A1455) one of the 722 class.
Displacement 850 ton. Dim. 51.78 x 12.11 x 4.2m. Draught 3.7m.
Diesel-electric powered by four diesel engines 2.400 shp, speed 13.6 knots. Twin screws.
Bunker capacity 160.000 liters gasoil and 46 tons fresh water.
Two water-canons for firefighting, capacity of 10.000 liters foam.
Systems for protection for chemical, nuclear and bacteriological war.
Hull reinforced to navigate in areas of ice with a thickness of 50mm.
Support facilities for divers. Equipment for under water welding.
Crew 24.
Trials 17 Oct. 1969. Commissioned 15 Oct. 1970.

Thereafter based at Wilhelmshaven.

2002 Bought by the navy of Uruguay. And taken over on 21 November 2002 at Kiel, Germany, renamed ROU MALDONADO.
She is assigned in the fleet of Uruguay with two primary tasks.
1) Ocean patrols.
2) Support to the task of charting of the external limit of the Continental Shelf, a project of national interest.
For this reason the navy of Paraguay began looking around on the world market of auxiliary ships, and one of the German “Wanerooge” class tugs fitted the bill perfectly. One of the advances of the ship was a reduced crew. Other advances were, tonnage and dimensions to maneuver in the national waters and docks. Modern equipment and the same technology of the ROU OYARVIDE. Can be used for a long patrol voyages. Diesel –electric. Capacity for search and rescue.
Crew of MALDONADO and OYARVIDE can easily be transferred between both vessels.
Tow capacity and oceanic salvage work.
Fire extinction equipment to extinct fires on vessel in port, coastal waters and high seas. Support for divers and for training. Can easily navigate on the rivers Rio Uruguay and the La Plata and coastal waters.
Is now equipped with two high-speed Zodiac’s for interception of boarding of vessels on the high seas.
Has not heavy armament, but there is a possibility to mount one 40 mm gun

The Commandant in Chief of the navy traveled to Germany in July 2002, and arranged the transfer of the vessel to Uruguay flag.

She has replaced the Avisio ROU CTE. PEDRO CAMPBELL which performed this task the last 60 years, and she will be taken out of service.

History of the ships which carried the name MALDONADO.

She is the fifth ship in the Uruguayan Navy, which carried the name MALDONADO.

The transport MALDONADO 1908-1915. The Government of Uruguay acquired her in May 1908.
During 1912 on the orders of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs used for the settlement of the new Uruguayan-Brazilian frontier.
1915 After completing this task she was transferred to the Uruguayan navy and renamed BARON DE RIO BRANCO. Used by the navy till 1931, then handed over to the Nautical Club at Pocitos, first at anchor in the Punta Trouville and then towed to the jetty SARANDI, were it was used as a floating base for sportclub Neptuno.
During a storm, she broke from her moorings in July 1958 and was driven on the coast, where she got total loss. She is on a stamp of Uruguay issued 1998 http://www.correo.com.uy/filatelia/fram ... ingles.htm


Tug MALDONADO.

Built in 1922 by a English yard for the Italian Government under the name FAUSTO.
Arrived in June 1942 at Montevidio, but due to the presence of English ships, could not leave the port.
Was confiscated by the Government of Uruguay and renamed in MALDONADO.
She had a very short career under Uruguayan flag she was sunk on 01 August 1942 by a German submarine.
The crew was allowed to disembark, the captain Corbeta Mario Giambruno was taken prisoner, and returned to Uruguay one year later. It was the second lost merchant vessel during World War II of Uruguay, the first was the MONTEVIDEO.

Corvette MALDONADO. Ex B-1 and PC-1

Built in New York and launched on 3 April 1943. Used during the Second World War for patrol missions and the hunt for submarines.
At that time fitted out with very modern equipment for detecting submarines and navigation equipment.
August 1944 commissioned in the Uruguayan navy under command of Captain of Frigate Manuel de la Bandera.
1970 Stricken from the Uruguay navy list.

Minesweeper ROU MALDONADO (MS 33) ex BIR HAKEIM ex USS?

On 4 September 1970 at Brest, France she was commissioned in the Uruguayan Navy.
Built in 1954 in the USA, later transferred to the navy of France.
21 November 1970 arrived at Montevideo under command of Captain of Corvette Félix Ochoa.
Used for patrol duties in Uruguayan waters, and also used by the Service Oceanographic and Hydrograph of the navy for survey for minerals in the territorial waters.
17 November 1977 went aground near kilometer 202.5 of the Rio Uruguay, refloated on 2 February 1978.
Severe damaged, and as a result she was broken up on 02 June 1980.
