DANDOLO battleship 1882

Built as the first largest armed navy vessel of the world on the yard of the Royal Naval Yard at La Spezia, Italia for the Italian navy.
06 Jan. 1873 laid down.
10 July 1878, launched under the name DANDOLO, one sistership the DUILIO.
Displacement 11.202 tons standard, 12.265 tons maximum. Dim. 109.2 x 19.7 x 8.8m. (draught).
Powered by two vertical compound steam engines, 8.050 ihp. speed 15 knots. Twin screws.
Speed supplied by 6 cylindrical coal fired boilers. Endurance 3.760 miles by a speed of 10 knots.
Armament 4 - 17.7 inch, 7 – 6 inch, 5 – 4.7 inch, 16 – 57 mm, 2 – 37 mm, 4 – 14 inch torpedo tubes above the waterline forward.
Crew 420. Later increased to 515.
11 April 1882 completed.

She was the first battleship in the world rigged only with a military mast. Director Engineer Benedetto Brin designed her and her sister.
Had 83 watertight compartments. When built she was heaviest armed warships in the world.
Rebuilt between 1895/98 to Insp. Eng. Giacinto Pulino’s design
1900 Her main armament replaced by 4 – 10 inch guns, and 6 – 37mm guns, 4 MG added, and torpedo tubes altered to 4 – 17.7 inch. Displacement reduced to 10.679 tons standard and 11.264 ton full load.
Her main engine replaced by a 2-shaft VC steam engine, 7.500/8.045 ihp., speed 15.6 knots.
During World War I 6 – 37mm guns removed.
At that time she was used as a local defence ship, first at Brindisi and later at Valona
23 January 1920, decommissioned, and later scrapped.
