GLENHUNTELY barque 1862

Built in 1862 as an iron barque by John Ried & Co. of Port Glasgow for S.Johnston & Co. at Mersey Chambers, Liverpool.
April 1861 completed under the name GLENHUNTLY ( Lloyds Register 1866 and 1872, and given as GLENHUNTLEY, as on stamp in 1889 and 1896
Tonnage 547 ton. Dim. 165.2 x 28.1 x 17.5ft.
One deck, two bulkheads.

The owner owned only one vessel, and she was from building till her loss owned by Johnston.
She was a regular U.K./Aus/NZ. trader, and according Mr. John D. Stevenson during some stage of her career she was chartered by Shaw Saville.
In 1784 registered at Liverpool, and was she under command of Capt. G.W. Large.
On a voyage from Liverpool to Freemantle, under command of Capt. Shaw, loaded with a cargo of coal, in the vicinity of Tristan da Cunha she sprang a leak in May 1898, which could not be located.
The master decided to head for Tristan da Cunha, but the pump could not cope with the amount of water the vessel was making, and the vessel had to be abandoned.

The crew arrived at the island in their own boats on 4 June 1898.
