Pyotr Emtsov

Post by john sefton » Mon Aug 31, 2009 4:28 pm

I don't have any information on this ship other than the following.
The Iranian navy on Tuesday seized Soviet freighter Pyotr Emtsov when sailing in the Persian Gulf, said spokesman yesterday Soviet Foreign Ministry, Gennady Gerasimov.
According to Soviet spokesman said, confirming reports from Japan, was heading Emtsov Piotr Kuwait, from a Black Sea port, when he was captured in international waters by the Iranian Navy.
Gerasimov said he was awaiting more extensive reports, but according to first reports, none of the crew members was injured in the accident.
The Soviet ship fired several distress calls that were captured by Japanese shipping sources and
Moreover, Iraq said yesterday that its forces had "cleared" on Tuesday Iraqi oil terminal "abandoned and isolated." Observers estimate that this release is probably referring to the oil platform Umayo in the northern Gulf, whose occupation was announced last Monday by Iran, as part of a new naval offensive. Baghdad had not recognized the occupation by the enemy of this important strategic location, Iran would facilitate control of the Fao peninsula. Tehran Radio said yesterday that his army was fully dominating terminal Al-Umayo, having evacuated her radar and other military equipment.

Built as one of the general-cargo ships of the Dnepr/Geroi Panfilovsty type of which 12 were under Russian flag.
One of this type was the PETR YEMTSOV (as given by Lloyds Lists, some sources give PYOTR YEMTSOV)
Built in 1975 by the Kherson Shipyard at Kherson, Russia, for the Russian Government, and managed by the Black Sea Shipping Co. (BLASCO), Odesa.
Tonnage 11.750 gross, 5.949 net, 13.541 dwt, dim. 162.31 x 22.20 x 9.23m.
Powered by a 6 cyl. B&W Briansk engine, 10.600 bhp, speed 18 knots.
Can carry 388 TEU’s, palletized or bulk cargo.

During the six years war between Iraq and Iran, the Soviet Union was shipping much war material to Iraq, in September 1986 when she steamed up the Persian Gulf the PYOTR YEMTSOV was seized by Iranian gunships. The vessel was searched and released after 36 hours. Her cargo was construction material and she was bound for Kuwait.
1989 She made a voyage from Monfalcone to Odessa and passed Istanbul on 30 Sept. 1989.

After the collapse of the Communist system in Russia, Odessa was in the Ukrainian State, and most probably the PETR YEMTSOV was reflagged under the flag of Ukrainia.
1995 BLASCO got in financially trouble and the companies more as 200 vessels were tied up around the world, sold or reflagged of auctioned. The company nowadays has only a few vessels.

1998 Sold by the Black Sea Shipping Co., Ukraine to Sylvan Marine Corp., St Vincent and the Grenadines, renamed BUGOVO.
It looks that she was sold before in that year, Marine News gives also for 1998 the name OSPREY 1.
2001 Sold to Elfra Ltd.(Strongtec Systems Ltd.) Georgia, and renamed SEA DESTINY.
2002 Sold for scrapping to Bhikamal Chhotelal, India, and arrived at Alang 05 Dec. 2002, beached 10 Dec. 2002.

On the stamp the Cyrillic name on the bow is missing the letter “Y”.
