FLOKI

Not a shipsname is given for the vessel depict on this minisheet by Island on 13 March 2003.
The following comes from the Icelandic Post website:

The Nordic Philatelic Exhibition Nordia 2003 will be held at Kjarvalsstaoir in Reykjavik, October 16th-19th. The Icelandic Post will issue a minisheet for this occasion. The motif is based on the account in the Book of Settlements of the Viking Flóki Vilgeröarson.

The text on the M.S. reads:

Flóki brought three ravens with him to sea and when released the first one he flew back in the directions where they came from, the second flew up into the air and back to the ship and the third flew right before the ship leading then to their destination. “According to the story the Icelandic raven stock is descended from the three ravens of Flóki

Flóki gave the country its name and came to the conclusion that it was uninhabitable whereupon he returned to Norway.

Ruins can be found at the farm Brjánslækur in the West where, according the folklore, raven-Flóki sojourned for the winter of 865 A.D.
