CATHERINE sailing vessel 1837

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Sep 15, 2009 9:21 pm

Built as a wooden ship under yard no 82 by Alexander Hall & Co., Aberdeen Scotland for A.Brown.
12 July 1837 launched under the name CATHERINE.
Tonnage 234 gross.
Barque rigged.
Her port of registry was Peterhead.
First master is given as A. Brown, so it looks like the owner was also the captain of the vessel, and built for his account.

She was lost on 3 October 1846 when at anchor in Waterloo Bay near the mouth of the Fish River, South Africa, when her anchor cables snapped during a south-westerly gale.
No lives were lost, but her cargo of provisions could not be salvaged.

Ciskei 1994 65c sg242, scott222.
