Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Oct 01, 2009 8:06 pm

The Hungarian Post issued the two stamps named ‘The History of Hungarian Shipping’ on 7 March 1995.

Steam shipping on the river Tisza is 150 years old.

A regular steamship service between Szeged and Szolnok commenced in 1845 on the River Tisza.
The 14 Forint value shows in the background pictures of the first navigable section of the Tisza with the landscape of Szeged. In the foreground is a tug-paddle steamship of the area.

Pal Vasarhelyi was born 200 years ago.

Vasahelyi (1795-1846) was the most famous hydraulic engineer of the reform Age. He designed the regulation of the Tisza and was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His main work is the Regulation Plan of the Tisza which was worked out by him on the basis of the serveys carried out between 1833 and 1845. The plan of the regulation of the Vaskapu on the Lower Danube was another significant achievement of his.

The portrait of Vasarheylyi is from a drawing of Miklos Barabas – is shown on the left of the stamp. The main part of the stamp is taken up by a picture of a ship that was used for surveying the sections of the river.
