SOVETSKY SOYUZ. Passenger ship. Formerly the Albert Bailin named after a distinguished director of her owners Hamburg America Line. Built in 1923. As she was named after a Jew the Nazis changed her name to Hansa in 1935. 21,131 grt, 646' x 72'. She was sunk by a mine
in March 1945 while carrying troops to the Russian front. After being raised and refitted she emerged with one funnel under her current name in 1955. Employed on the Viadivostock - Kamachatka service. Currently 23,008 grt 1400 passengers. 18 knots. Until the middle 60's had the distinction of being the largest liner under the Russian flag. Builders Blohm & Voss, Hamburg. Yard No. 403. Geared turbines, twin screw 13,500 shp 16 knots. Passengers 251 First 340 2nd 960 3rd Class. Crew 415. Maiden voyage Hamburg - New York July 4th 1923. 1930 refitted by builders with new boilers and turbines, 29,000 shp 191 knots. 20,931 grt second refit 1934 the forepart was lengthened and modernised resulting in a gain of 2 knots. Length 677ft. Passengers 204 1st,
361 tourist, 400 3rd. 1940 Training and accommodation ship for the German Navy. Sank on March 6th. 1945 while on a voyage from Gotenhafen (Gydnia) to the Western Baltic, off Warnemunde. Refit took several years both at Antwerp and Warnemunde. Assumed present name in 1953. Finally delivered by the Warnow shipyard
in 1955 to Sovtorgflot. In 1971 had a four month general overhaul at Taikoo Dockyard, Hong Kong.

1950 Renamed SOVETSKY SOYUZ.
Her name is also given as SOVETSKIY SOYUZ.
First quarter of 1982 broken up in Russia.
