Re: Soleil Royale
"Soleil Royal" (fr. Soleil-Royal 'Royal Sun') - the ship of the French Navy. Laid at the shipyards in Brest in 1668. Ship master builder was Laurent Hubak [1]. The ship was launched in 1669 and became part of the French fleet. According to their design features «Soleil-Royal» represented the three-masted sailing ship of the line. 3 ship decks (decks) the ship carried 104 (later 110/112) caliber gun from 4 to 36 pounds. For many years after launching the ship remained without, and stood in the harbor of Brest. «Soleil-Royal» has been re-armed during the war years 1688-1697 and train for a new class 112-gun ship. Soleil-Royal was a good sailing and decorating his body was considered one of the most beautiful and complex of all the bizarre flagships. Latrine (nasal) ship figure as "Sun" was chosen at the insistence of Louis XIV, as his personal symbol. Battleship "Soleil Royal" participated in the Battle of Beachy Head. At the head of a squadron of 75 ships, with sun-Royal in the center of the line of battle, Count Tourville wins English and Dutch fleet under the command of Lord Torrington and Cornelis Evertsen, in the Battle of Cape Beachy Head by 10 July 1690. Temporarily, the French fleet was mistress of the English Channel. and at the Battle of Barfleur. At the Battle of Barfleur (29 May 1692) the ship was badly damaged, could not return to Brest and landed aground at Cherbourg for repairs, along with two other ships. On the night of the 2nd of June 3, the ship "Soleil Royal" was attacked by the English fire ships and was burned. Of the crew, which consisted of 883 people (according to other sources 850), only one survived.
