The stamp issued by the Cape Verde in 2010 depict two caravela redonda's and a nao used when the islands were discovered by the Genoese António da Noli, his brother Bartolemeo and his nephew Raffaele in 1455, whilst in the service of Portugal. The Portuguese Diogo Gomes may have sailed with them but both he and Diogo Afonso have rival claims for the first discovery. At that time the Cape Verde were uninhabited
The caravel was used from the 14th to the 17th century is shallow draught cargo vessel was used by Spanish and Portuguese discoverers. The Spanish and Portuguese caravels were three masted square rigged on the foremast and the other two lateen rigged. Tonnage ca 140 tons.
Nao a three masted ship, square rigged on the fore and mainmast and lateen on the mizzen mast, she was larger as the caravel, with a tonnage of ca 200 tons.
