The design of the five 35c stamps issued by Australia, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Islands for the First Fleet on 26 January 1988 are based upon paintings and journals of people who sailed with the Fleet in 1787/88, contemporary drawings, and advice from experts in maritime history.
From left to right is given what happened when the First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay and Port Jackson.
1) HMS SUPPLY heads into Botany Bay, the three transports follow,(The SUPPLY arrived one day before the transports in Botany Bay that the design is not correct). An aboriginal family watches on the beach. Nowhere can I find if there were aboriginals around when the First Fleet arrived.
2) HMS SUPPLY and transports are anchored in Botany Bay.
3) The First Fleet moves in Port Jackson.
4) HMS SUPPLY rides at anchor while marines are ferried ashore.
5) In the evening of 26 January the British colors are hoisted, the design is from a painting by Algernon Talmage now in the Tate Gallery in London.
