HORTENSE

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Jan 19, 2011 8:39 pm

The wreck depict on this stamp is identified as the French ship HORTENSE, not easily to find a ship under that name connected to St Pierre et Miquelon but Mr Erhard Jung found one, and most probably that ship is depict on the stamp.
Where and when built unknown
When lost she carried the name HORTENSE, so most probably she was also launched under that name.
Tonnage 200 ton, dim?
Three masts and barkentine rigged.
Home port Bayonne, France.

02 September 1883 she was lost on a voyage from St Pierre et Miquelon to St Martin de Re, France under command of Captain Charles Chavert with a cargo of cod and a crew of 8 men and 2 passengers near Les Sables d’Olonne on the French Atlantic coast. (Position 46 29.3N and 01 47.4W)

St Pierre et Miquelon 1993 5f sg 692, scott? (do not have the stamp)
