Hungary issued on 11 February 1999 a set of three stamps, depicting watercraft from the maritime history of the country.
The 1110Ft stamp depicts a 15th century river ship.
The Hungarian fleet had a significant role when the Turks reached the southern borders of Hungary and probably won its greatest victory on 14 July 1456 when Nándorfehérvár was freed from the Turkish blockade.
Breydenbach’s wood-engraving made in 1486 during the reign of King Mathias seems to be the first authentic depiction of Hungarian ships.
A 25-30 metres long ship can be seen in the stamp. The stern similar to that of a sea ship is fitted with a raised-afterdeck with the rudder control underneath a tent. The Latin sail on the mainmast is set and in front of the rudder a rolled up steering-sail can be seen. The ship is also equipped with oars.
