Hope

Post by john sefton » Tue Jun 08, 2010 1:34 pm

The barque HOPE was built in Prussia in 1845 (probably with a different name), Built of iron and measured 126ft, x 26.5ft. x 10.7ft. She had a 23 feet long raised quarter deck. Sometime prior to 1874 she was 250 tons net and 262 tons gross. In 1877 she was 252 tons net and 252 tons gross. (No difference in tonnages because they both refer to cargo space - practically every square foot of space below main deck was used for cargo when she was 252 tons gross ??). In 1874 this barque was owned by W. Fraser
and registered in London. She was apparently sold to Karran in 1876.
N.B, The HOPE was lengthened in 1865 and the stated length is for after lengthening.

I have noted a reference to an article in "The Stamp Magazine" (year not known) about "The Karran Fleet", saying that "Hope" was sold "it is thought to the Norwegians. Anyone with more information?
