Re: Mpasa
Built under yard No 952p as a lake passenger-cargo vessel (most sources given built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast) maybe ordered by this yard but she was built by A & J Ingles at Pointhouse, Glasgow for the Nyasaland Railways.
01 February 1935 completed.
Shipped in sections to Chipoka, Nyasaland where she was reassembled and launched as the MPASA.
Tonnage 270 ton, dim. 105 x 22ft.
Fitted out with diesel engine, one shaft speed 9 knots.
1936 In service on the lake.
She was the first vessel ordered by the Nyasaland Railways after the railway was extended to Chipoka on Lake Malawi in 1933.
The Nyasaland Railways all soon took over all transport of cargo and passengers on the lake.
After 1951 the MPASA was only used as a cargo vessel after the ILALA II came in service.
1967 Converted in a tanker by Malawi Railways.
Before 1993 out of service and her future is uncertain.
2011 Can not find any trace more of her, so most probably scrapped or still rusting away..
