CHIPEWYAN CANOE: Used in north and central Canada.
Built by the Chipewyan Indians of the area west of Churchill to Great Slave Lake. Built of spruce or birch-bark, with 30 – 40 ribs.
Flat-bottomed canoes with low flaring sides for hunting caribou and for travelling.
Bow and stern were partly decked.
Occasionally set a small square sail; sapling used as a temporary mast.
Reported length 3.6 – 6.7 metres. e.g., length 4.9m, width 1.0m, depth 0.36m.
