SELWYN RANGE m.v (shown in Gibbons as SILWYN RANGE). a bulk‑carrier, built by N.S.W. Govt. Eng. & S.B. U'taking at Newcastle (N.S.W. Australia) for Australian Shipping Commission at Melbourne. Her dimensions are 171.30m x 25.00m x 14.03 x 10.19m (draught); her tonnage is 17,705 gt., 9,822 nt and 27,550 dwt. Her speed is 14.5 knots.
She is a CSD‑ship with 1 B & W diesel of 11,600 bhp.
She was commissioned in December 1977 and she is strengthened for ore cargoes and of her 6 holds holds 2 and 5 may be empty.
When the air photo for this stamp was taken, the SELWYN RANGE happened to be at Honaria, because she couldn't load phosphate at Nauru due to a strong wind and a whimsical ocean current there. I read this particular in an article by Mr. De Leouw in the Dutch philatelic monthly Nederlandsch Maandlblad voor Philately.

The depicted vessel on the stamp is the Australian bulker SELWYN RANGE. And when this air-photo for this stamp was taken the vessel was at Honiara, due to strong winds and a whimsical ocean current at Nauru she could not load there and was at anchor waiting for better weather.

05 March 1977 launched as the SELWYN RANGE.

Her original name allocated was Hamersley Range but before launching renamed in SELWYN RANGE.
She is strengthened for ore cargoes, and of her six holds, hold two and five may be empty when hold one, three, four and six are loaded.
Basically ready in December 1977 but only taken over by owners in August 1978, thereafter laid up at Newcastle, NSW.
October 1979 sailed from her lay-up berth to load her first cargo.
