Built as a frigate under yard No 883 by HC Stülcken & Sohn, Steinwerder near Hamburg for the German Bundes Marine.

15 August 1959 launched as the AUGSBURG F 222, christened by Mrs. Anny Müller the wife of the mayor of Augsburg, the town after she was named. She was one of the Köln class.
Displacement 2,134 ton standard, 2,591 full load. Dim. 109.9 x 11.02 x 4.60m (draught), length bpp. 105.0m
Powered: CODAG by two Brown Boveri gasturbines, 24,000 shp. four MAN diesel engines, 11,843 hp., twin shafts, speed 32 knots.
Range 920 mile by full speed.
Armament: 2 – 100mm guns in single mountings, 6 – 40mm in 2 twin and 2 single mountings. 2 quadruple Bofors mortars.
Crew 200-213.
07 April 1962 commissioned.
She was the third unit of her class and the class was built for service mostly in the Baltic, the class was built for speed and she had powerful anti-aircraft guns.
During her time in service she participated in many exercises in the Northern Baltic, Atlantic and Mediterranean and made many voyages abroad.
09 May 1975 during the night in the Skagerrak she collided with the Polish vessel PROFESSOR BOHDANOWICZ in which she sustained heavy damage and four crew were injured, she underwent emergency repairs in Grimstad, Norway.
From 01 October 1975 till 11 October 1976 under repair in Germany.
18 January 1982 she collided with the British RFA TIDESPRING during a manoeuvre.
01 October 1985 when berthed at Wilhelmshaven a Russian tug rammed her which caused a damage bill of 630,000 DM
Under refit by the Lloyd Werft, Bremerhaven from 08 September 1986 in which all engines were overhauled and new decks welded to give her more strength especial in the amidships. Total cost about 30 million DM.
After trials it was found that she was not more suitable to participate in Atlantic exercises and instead participated in the DESEX 1/87 maneuvers.
March 1978 she made her last officially voyage to Den Helder the Dutch navy base.
30 August 1988 out of service in Wilhelmshaven.
17 November 1989 towed to Hamburg for scrapping .
20 November 1989 scrapping commenced.
