LIVERPOOL was one of the 'Town' class cruisers, 9.400 tons and 591ft 6in in length, mountlng 12-6 inch guns in four triple turrets when built. When the war ended in 1945, ne of her turrets was removed leaving her with 9-6inch.
She also had 8 4 inch antl-alrcraft guns and 6-21inch torpedo tubes. Launched at the Fairfield yard 24 March 1937. She had a design speed of just over 32 knots; On 21 January 1940 she intercepted the Japanese liner ASAMA MARU 35 miles from the coast of Japan and removed 21 German officers and men who were survivors of the German SS COLUMBUS. She then was based at Alexandria with the 7th Cruiser Squadron and participated in the action at Calabria, 9 July 1940. While covering a Fleet Air Arm attack on Leros 14th October she was torpedoed SE of Crete. HMS ORION took her in tow to Alexandria. She then went to San Francisco for permanent repairs. For a time she was covering Arctic convoys. At the end of the war, she continued on active service till reduced to the Reserve in 1952. the decision to break her up was announced in 1958.
