STAG HOUND. Built 1850 in Boston, Mass. for local owners by the famous Donald McKay. She was launched in about 100 days from the laying of her keel and was built to the order of George B Upton and Sampson & Tappan, both of Boston, two of the most prominent owners of the early extreme clippers. Of 1535 tons (about 100 tons British measurement) she was the biggest merchant ship built in Boston, with dimensions of 215ft. x 40ft. x 21ft. and carried a crew of 46. Her stern was small and at eight feet forward of midships of the taffrail, she was only 24.5ft wide. Under full sail she spread nearly 11,000 yards of canvas in a single suit. All masts raked alike 1 1/4 ins. to the foot. The foremast was set 50ft from the centre of the stem; thence by 67ft. to the mainmast; thence 56ft. to the mizzen, which was 42ft. forward of the sternpost. In 1851 she went from New York to San Francisco in 107 days losing several topmasts and sails in the process. Before she was finally burnt off the coast of Brazil in 1863, she made a number of other fast voyages.
