The battleship Oktybrskaia -Revolutia (October Revolution) was launched as the Gangut at the Galernii Yard, St. Petersburg, on October 7, 1911. She had been laid down in June 1909 and was completed in January 1914, being refitted in later years. There were originally four of these odd-looking ships built, with naval authorities condemned as "unseaworthy and ineffective". They had a standard displacement of 23,606 tons, and a full load displacement of over 26,000 tons.
Dimensions: length 619 ft. o.a., beam 87 ft., draft 271/2 ft. Main armament 12 12 in. guns. Secondary armament 12 4.7 in. Anti-aircraft armanent, eight 3 in., 12 37 mm. Machinery: Parsons turbines direct drive, shaft horse power, 42,000; speed 22 knots. Originally fitted with four 18 in. torpedo tubes. From October 1931 to August 1934 modernisation of the ship was carried out, at the Baltic Works, Leningrad. The battleship played an important part in boosting morale during the siege of Leningrad for she remained at Kronstadt, and bombarded the attacking forces. She was converted into a training ship in 1972. Her name is carried on today by a cruiser of the Sverdlov class, ex
Molotovsk.
