The Faroes Islands issued three stamps on 06 February 1989 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Torshavn Church. One of these stamps the 15 Kr depicts the church bell, which is said to have been acquired in 1708. It originates from the ship NORSK LOVE (Norwegian Lion) which went down in Lambavik on New Year’s Eve 1707. The bell is decorated with palmettes and bears the inscription “Danscke Ostindische Compagnies Scheb Nordische Lowe” (The Danish East India Company’s ship Nordische Lowe) and the crowned monogram of the Company. It is 30cm tall, with an outside rim diameter of 41.5 cm.
NORSKE LÖWE or NORDISCHE LÖWE or NORSKE LOVE was a ship of the Danish East India Company, where built and when not found.
Of her early history is known that she in 1682 carried slaves to Atschin.
04 December 1707 she left Copenhagen under command of Capt. Roluf Meincke.
18 December she was hit by lightning.
19th December her captain decided to cut the mainmast, the weather must have been very bad at that time,
When the main mast came down she took with her the mizzenmast.
At noon that same day, she was hit by a breaker, which killed 14 men, and damaged the ship further.
31 December 1707 she sank in Lambavik in the Faroe Islands. Around 100 men were lost.
The ship on the Mozambique stamp is most probably the same ship, there have been many warships under that name in the Danish Navy but she has only one row of gun-ports and most likely is she a merchant ship.
