La MELPOMENE

The stamp is designed after an engraving in the navy museum in Trocadero.
She was the last sailing frigate built for the French National Navy on the Arsenal, Rochefort.
1883 Keel laid down.
20 August 1887 launched as the La MELPOMENE.
Tonnage 2,000 ton, dim. 50 x 12 x 6m. (draught).
Armament?
Crew 22 Officers and 167 crew.
Completed?

1890 Training vessel for sailors making two 4 month voyages a year
01 January 1904 decommissioned and placed in reserve at Landevennec.

1909 In use as a store ship for torpedo boats at Aberwrac’h.
1920 In use as a hulk at Lorient.
1933 In use as a baracks/accommodation ship at Lorient.
1940 During World War II sunk by bombs of allied aircraft.

The stamp was designed by the French marine painter Roger Chapelet (1903 – 1995)
