On 18 April 2011 within an official ceremony the sea patrol ship SKRUNDA was handed over to the Armed forces of Republic of Latvia. The ship was built by JSC "Riga Shipyard" in co-operation with German partners Abeking & Rasmussen. SKRUNDA is the first military ship built by JSC "Riga Shipyard" for navy of Latvian Armed forces.
The ship is built in SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) technology, being the first SWATH military ship not only in Latvia, but in Europe and the World.
The building of SKRUNDA was started in 2009, the total costs were about 11 million EUR.
In the next two years four more patrol ships will be supplied to the Armed forses. The ships are named after towns and cities of Latvia where important battles for independence have taken place – SKRUNDA, CËSIS, VIESITE, JELGAVA and „RËZEKNE.
Besides military purposes, all five patrol ships will be used for civilian needs like people search and rescue. The new ships can be equipped with devices for gathering oil as well as equipment for finding and disposal of mines.
