PICKLE Tall Ship

Mr. Ken Berry has identified the ship on this stamp as the PICKLE.

Built as a two-masted wooden topsail schooner by the Grumant shipyard in Petrozavodsk on Lake Onega, Russia for the Ekron Company, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Launched as the ALEVTINA & TUY, four sisters the ANNA, ELENA MARIA BARBARA, SADKO and VOLCHISTA.
Displacement 58 tons, dim. 29.50 x 4.67 x 2.25m. (draught), length of hull 18.70m, length bpp. 16.00m.
One auxiliary engine, Volvo Penta TAMD 41HD, 145hp.
Sail area 240m².
She carries a figure of a woman as figurehead
Crew 4-5.
Accommodation for 6-8 guests, on day cruises 20 guests.
1995 Delivered, homeport St Petersburg.

The design was made by the Russian naval architect from St Petersburg, and he was fascinated by the lines of the vessels sailed in the Baltic around the 128th century. The type was used at that time as mailboat, smuggler and piracy and small warship.

After delivery used as a sailing schoolship, or for charter.
08 June 1996 she came in collision with a Kuwait cargo vessel in the River Elbe, she got a leak and had to send out a SOS, the lifeboats HERMANN HELMS based at Cuxhaven and the WILHELM KAISEN based at Helgoland came to the rescue, with the help of pumps to keep the water out, the two lifeboats escorted the ALEVTINA & TUI back to Cuxhaven.
Early 2000 under Finish flag.
Early 2004 sold to J.R. Services, Brigton, England at that time she was still under Finish flag.
Took part in Sail Brest 2004.
During the winter of 2004/05 she underwent a major refit in Gloucester, U.K.
After the refit renamed in PICKLE and British registration, she was named in memory of HMS PICKLE who brought the first news to Great Britain that Nelson had died at Trafalgar and the victory of the Battle of Trafalgar. (she is not a replica of the HMS PICKLE as given on some web-sites.)
2005 She took part in Sea Britain 2005 celebrations to commemorate the Bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar at that time she was chartered by the OCEAN YOUTH TRUST.
2012 She is for sale, asking price £320,000.
