POHNPEI canoe

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Apr 11, 2012 9:00 pm

Most of the outrigger canoes used at Pohnpei and nearby islands was of the “wa” type, she was made from a dugout hull, rounded in cross sections. Flat bottom amidships rising to overhanging, pointed ends sharp at cutwater. Multiple thwarts; small platform amidships rested on outrigger booms.
Exterior smoothed with coral.
Two squared booms, set close together, connected with the long float by paired stanchions.
Older boats had a platform for passengers, covered with mats, and protected by a awing.
Additional strengthening provided by poles from the end of the hull to the end of the booms and by one or two long stringers, the ends of which were lashed to the float. Paddled or poled and some set a lateen type sail.
Length 6 – 9 metre with a beam of 0.34 metre with a dept of 0.44 metre.

Micronesia 1993 29c sg316, scott175.

From: Aak to Zumbra, a dictionary of the World’s watercraft.
