CHRISTIAAN HUYGENS. Built by the Netherlands Shipbuilding Company for the Nederland Line.
From 1940 she was under Orient Line Managenent, trooping and retaining her Dutch crew.
Orient give her year of build as 1928 and gross tonnage as 16,287. Service speed 17 knots. (Netherlands 1931 80c SG395b)
Footnote: Named after the inventor of the Pendulum Clock which was the forerunner of the ships Chronometer. He lived 1629-95. His time piece appears on SG923 issued by Netherlands in 1962.

Built in 1927-'28 by Nederlandse Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Amsterdam, #186, for Stoomvaart Maatschappij 'Nederland', Amsterdam. Passengership, Gt:15,637, Nt:9,319, Dw:10,677, L:173.70m. Br:20.90m. draft:12.12m, 2-10 cyl. Sulzer diesels:11,600 BHP. 16½ kn. max.17 kn. crew:290, pass. 1st class:269, 2nd class:250, 3rd class:53. Placed in Amsterdam - Batavia service. '31 Gt:15,704, '37 Gt:16,286, '40 Troop transport, managed by Orient Line, 26-08-'45 during a voyage Antwerp - Rotterdam she struck a mine near Westkapelle and had to be beached, badley damaged, on Zuid Steenbank, 1 dead. On September 5 the ship broke in two.
