BORDA

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun May 17, 2009 9:29 pm

On 19 October 1981 the French Post Office issued a 1.40 franc stamp to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the French Naval Academy.
The French Naval School was established by King Louis_Phillipe on 1 November 1830 on board of the French ship-of-the-line ORION anchored in the roadstead at Brest. Four other ships succeeded ORION until the school was moved ashore, first at Laninon, then in 1936 at Saint Pierre. During WWII, the students of the school were transferred to various places including Algeria and Casablanca. After World War II the school was located at Lanveoc Poulmic, the buildings of which are depicted on the stamp together with a ship. She is the BORDA (III) ex Le INTREPIDE.

More on the Naval Academy is given on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89cole_Navale

From Mr. Jean-Lous Araignon a French ship stamp collector I received the following, the ship on the stamp is identified by French stamp magazines as the BORDA (III) ex LE INTREPIDE.

She was built in 1864 at Rochefort as a wooden two-decker for the French Navy.
Launched under the name INTREPIDE.
Tonnage 5.040 tons, dim. 233.8 x 53.1ft.
Armament 90 guns, an other source gives 74 guns.
One auxiliary Indret steam engine, 900 nhp., one shaft.

1864 Used as a troop transport vessel.
1890 renamed in LA BORDA and used as Naval School ship until 1913.
1914 Stricken from the navy list and broken up.

Warship. From 1830 to 1914 and before the French Naval College was built the school was held aboard vessels anchored at Brest. Before 1935 the college consisted of barracks at Lannion in Northern Britany. The BORDA was used before 1830. In 1935 the College, near Brest was built, between 1940/45 (WWII) it was seriously damaged. A new building was built outside Brest, at Lanvise-Paulmic in 1961. The five ships used before the college was built were all called (or nicknamed) BORDA.

From the records of T Broadley.
