CAROLINA. Frigate Launched 1670. Built for Royal Navy. In company with the PORT ROYAL and the Sloop ALBEMARLE she sailed from the Downs 17'" August 1669 with 93 Passengers. Reaching Barbados in October, then ran into hurricane winds which wrecked the ALBERMARLE on the coast of Barbados, and the PORT ROYAL in the Bahamas. CAROLINA reached Bermuda badly battered, where a sloop was engaged to assist the expedition. After battling further hurricanes the ships reached the Ashley River where the first permanent settlement was established in the Province of South Carolina . U.S.A 1930 2c. SG684 (EWA Vol 1 p6)
