Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Jul 10, 2013 8:36 pm

From my Mr. Gennadiy Sitnikov I got a scan from a stamp never issued in Russia, the intention of the issues was the voyage of Nikita Khrushchev to Norway, Denmark and Sweden in June 1964. But the stamp was never issued. Khrushchev was replaced in October 1964 by Brezhnev.
The inscription on the stamp gives: “Voyage of world and friendship to Denmark, Sweden and Norway”.
The stamp (or label) sometimes appears on the market un-issued, but it is a rarity and expensive.

The vessel depict on the stamp was BASHKIRIYA as given on the ships-name on the hull of the vessel.

Built as passenger ship under yard No 118 by VEB Mathias-Thesen Werft, Wismar, East Germany for the Soviet Government.
23 June 1963 launched as the BASHKIRIYA she was one of the MIKHAIL KALININ class.

She was used in the international liner service in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Her boat deck was extended to the stern during a refit.

Total loss and sold for scrapping.
2013 I believe she is still there.

Russian 1964 4k sg?, scott? (Most probably is she also on the Georgia stamp of 2003 30t but it can also be her sister ADZHARIA she were the only two Russian passenger vessels with this form of stern according Mr. Sitnikov.)
