Trengganu pinas

6 cents depicts a Trengganu pinas. This trading vessel emanates from the Malay State of Trengganu. It has a European hull but Chinese sails with one or more European jib sails. They were formerly employed in some numbers in coastal trade from Trengganu, South to Singapore and North to Bangkok.

Given by Stanley Gibbons as TRENGGANU PINAS but the real name is PERAHU PINAS.
A coaster used in Peninsular Malaysia and built along the Trengganu River on the east coast of Malaysia.
Built from the 19th century and today still some operate.
She are mostly used to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore.
She are built along European lines with a well-molded counter stern clipper bow terminated in a characteristically upturned beak; good sheer; full turn of the bilges; straight sides.
Planked deck, two hatch cover hold, large mat deckhouse aft.
Steered with a rudder, tiller set ca. 15cm above the deck, being pushed away by the seated helmsman’s feet and brought back by pulleys.
Schooner rigged until can 1900 with long topmasts and short crosstrees; set jibheaded topsails; gaff sail braided to the mast. Later as seen on the stamp used two large polygonal Chinese lugsails strengthened with bamboo battens. Canvas or gunny sack jib sometimes set a long, bowsed-down bowsprit.
Crew 5 – 7.
Mostly 18 – 21m long, 4.5 – 5.2m wide and 2.1 – 2.4m deep.
